DUBAI, UAE - The United Arab Emirates reached a grim milestone on Tuesday when the number of Covid-19 cases in the country hit 600,000.

The UAE's National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority Tuesday reported 2,127 new cases in the previous 24-hour period.

This takes the total case toll to 601,950.

Surprisingly the number of deaths, by comparison, has reached only 1,734, suggesting a low mortality rate.

The UAE has been one of the most active countries in the world in testing and vaccination in a bid to curb the virus, but so far the number of cases being recorded on a daily basis has remained constant over several months.

Recently the UAE introduced laws requiring all those attending live events to be vaccinated. Proof of testing and/or vaccination is now required to enter restaurants, cafes, shopping malls, hotels, beaches, and parks in the UAE capital, Abu Dhabi.

The seven emirates all have their own guidance.
